After his marriage to Clarkey Perisho, this young Quaker family was affiliated with the Back Creek Monthly Meeting in Randolph Co, North Carolina, then in 1796 they went to Westfield Monthly Meeting in Surry Co., North Carolina and from there to Mt Pleasant Monthly Meeting in Grayson Co Virginia.5 August 14, 1806, Joseph, wife Clarissa, & children, Joshua, Joseph, Rachel & Anna, were received at the Miami Monthly Meeting in Warren County, Ohio, on a certificate from the Mt. Pleasant Monthly Meeting, VA. Joseph Small was shown on a tax list for in 1810 at Paint Township, Highland County, Ohio. Fall Creek Monthly Meeting in Highland County,Ohio was set off from Fairfield Monthly Meeting at a meeting of Miami Quarterly Meeting held 5th Nov, 1811. One of the first acts of the new meeting was to appoint a committee to confer with a similar committee of the Fairfield Monthly Meeting to establish the boundaries. The men selected were Richard Barrett, Josiah Thomasson, Walter Canady, Caleb Sumner, Obediah Small and Joseph Small
