James married Matilda Beauchamp, daughter of Russ Beauchamp and Hannah Lamb, on 3 March 1842 at Grant County, Indiana, By March 18, James was dismissed from the Mississinewa-Marion Monthly Meeting for marrying out of unity with the Friends Society.4,5 He died one mile south of Antioch, Huntington Co. Indiana on March 22, 1863 at the age of 41. He died of typhoid fever, lasting about 24 days in duration, however he had been suffering for about 15 years from consumption (tuberculosis).6 James Bowen Small was buried at Leedy Cemetery, Andrews, Huntington County, Indiana.
